There are different kinds of fishing reels, below is a list of the more common types:

Centrepin Reel- This reel is mainly used for fly-fishing.  This fly casting reel is rather simple in terms of mechanical assembly.  The first design of this reel was in 1874 by Charles F. Orvis, it is still practically the same.  They have made some improvement to fly reels, when it comes to fishing for bigger fish.

Bait Casting Reels- With these reels line is stored on a bearing supported revolving spool.  The reel is mounted above the rod.  This reel is sometimes called the “Overhead reel” because of the way the reel is mounted.  This reel dates back to the mid 1600 but didn’t become popular until around the 1870’s.  The earlier models of bait casting reels were constructed with brass or iron gears.  The castings were contrived of spools made of brass, hard rubber, or German silver.  Inverting the reel and using the back winding to retrieve the line operated them. The reel crank wheel was located on the right side of the reel due to the reel’s operation method.  Nowadays left-handed cranks have become more popular.  The majority of today’s bait casting reels are contrived from aluminum or stainless steel.  The have a level wind mechanism that prevents the line form becoming trapped under itself, this makes casting easier.  Another advancement is that they now have anti reverse handles and drags, which are designed to slow runs by large game fish.

Spin Cast Reel- The first spin cast reels came about in 1949.  This reel was designed to solve the problem of backlash located in bait cast creations.   In spin cat reels the line is thrown form a spool and can be used with light lures and baits.  They are similar to spinning reels, but slightly differ due to the fact that they have one or two pickup pins and a metal cup to wind the line on the spool.  They also have an outer nose cone that surrounds and protects the fixed spool.
