Fishhooks are manufactured for many different purposes, from leisurely fishing to extremely limited and specialized fishing. Hooks are designed to hold a multitude of artificial, dead or alive baits. These baits are what lure the fish in to take a bite, not knowing that there is a hook waiting for them.
The fishhook or a similar device has been around mankind for thousands of years. Evidence of some of the earliest recorded hooks was from Palestine around 7000 B.C. Man has created fish hoods form all different kinds of materials. They created them form wood, animal bone, human bone, shells, stone, iron, all the way up to the present day materials. Norwegians in the 1950’s still used wood to create their fishing hooks. Europe is where the first high quality steel hooks first derived. Hook masking then became a job for professionals.
The common parts of a fishhook are its point, the barb, the eye, the bend and shank, and the gap. The point is the shape end that penetrates the fish’s mouth or flesh. The barb is the projection that extends backwards from the point; this secures the fish from getting away. The eye is the end of the hook that is connected to the fishing line or lure. The bend and shank is the segment of the hook that brings the point and the eye together. The gap is the distance between the shank and the point; these five points are how hooks are described to people buying them.
Modern day hooks are manufactured from either high carbon steel, or stainless steel. Most of the high quality fishhooks are covered with corrosion resistance surface coating, this way they will not rust up form the water easily. In addition to this, coatings are applied to color and give artistic value to the hook it is applied to. Hooks that are designed for freshwater fishing ate usually coated with clear lacquer, but some can be coated in gold, tin, nickel and different colors to make them look different. This will appeal to the buyer’s eye. Mustad is a company, which produces hooks in six different colors; one of them is plain black.
