Discount Spin-Cast Reels
Spin cast reels came into play around 1949. This reel was designed for one main purpose, to solve the problem of backlash that was found in all the previous reel designs. The spin cast reel reduces the line twist and snare complaints that were commonly encountered with traditional spinning reel designs.

Just like the spinning reels in our discount fishing gear catalog, the spin cast reel line is thrown from a fixed spool. Due to the fact that the line is thrown from the spool, spin cast reels can be used with light lures and baits and still cast well. The spin cast reel does eliminate the wire bail and line roller of the spinning reel in support of one or two simple pickup pins and a metal cup to roll the line on the spool.
With a fixed spool, spin cast reels are able to cast lighter lures than bait cast reels. The only problem when casting light lures is that the friction of the nose cone against the unspooling line reduces the casting distance compares to spinning reels. Spin cast reels have narrow spools with less line capacity then spinning and bait casting reels. The narrow spools reduce line snare issues. Spin cats reels are equipped with both friction drags, and anti-reverse levers. Some models of spin cast reels have level wind mechanisms.
Most types of spin cast reels operate best with limp monofilament lines. These lines are the most flexible and limp. There was a model of spin cast reels that was designed only for the use of Super line. Spin cast reels were widely used in the 1950’s and 1960’s. They are not as common in today’s time, but they are a great fishing pole for beginners to work with.
In order to operate a spin cast reel the fisherman must Press a button on the rear of the reel to release the line pickup, and the button is then released during a forward cast to permit the line to fly off the spool. The button is then pressed again to stop the lure at the position the fisherman desires. While cranking the handle, the pickup pin automatically re-engages the line and spools it onto the reel.
There are not any particular types of lures that are needed for a spin cast reel. These reels are designed primarily for recreational fishing. They are easy to use and do not require a lot of skill, unlike fly fishing. A person should practice casting it and get the feel for it, just like any other fishing pole. If a person is not casting the line correctly, the line will most likely continue to tangle up. When a line becomes tangled it can take hours to fix, sometimes it cannot even be fixed and the fisherman will have to purchase a new role of line. It is a good pole for people just started to fish, because it is the least complicated to operate.
